We can now count down the days of July on two hands!

As we fast approach the fourth (and almost final) weekend it appears the general mood seems to have changed. With the collective amount of funds raised so far for adults living with cancer standing at over $1.6million, coupled with the feel good factor of not drinking for three weeks, its apparent people are experiencing a great sense of achievement.

As we head into the final week of the challenge, on behalf of the Dry July team and our beneficiaries across Australia we would like to say an advanced ‘Thank You’ to everyone for all your efforts!

Good luck, and here’s to making the final week of July a truly memorable and rewarding experience for all involved!

Quotes from our ambassadors...

Over half way through Dry July and I’m going well. I feel like an “old hand” having done it last year. I have had one Golden Ticket early in the month from a friend who invited us for dinner and couldn’t stand the thought of me not having a glass of wine. It’s odd, but it is other people who feel uncomfortable when I don’t drink! I find that at functions it’s better to walk around with a wine glass full of water rather than be empty handed. Then no one keeps asking me to have a drink. I find that very interesting!” Roy Billing

The other day I licked the pavement outside my local... but sadly no beer had been spilled that day” Jonesy, WSFM

"I've been making do by sniffing textas. The recycling bin is lighter but my nose is black” Amanda Keller, WSFM

Here's cheers: Dr Amanda Ling, Graham Moss and nurse Osbert De Rosario have pledged to go without alcohol this month while raising money for SCGH cancer patients. Picture: Andrew Ritchie.

Tapping into fundraising during Dry July

Many charitable locals are forfeiting their customary glass of wine and weekend six-pack this month as they raise money for cancer patients at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH).

They are taking part in the Dry July campaign, where participants are sponsored to abstain from drinking alcohol.

As well as collecting funds for patients in need, the cause aims to make people aware of their drinking habits and the value of a balanced, healthy lifestyle.

SCGH executive director and Dry July participant Dr Amanda Ling said more than 20,000 patients were treated in the hospital's medical oncology department every year.

"All money raised will go towards improving the waiting and treatment areas for patients and their families," she said. "Giving up alcohol for a month won't only improve your health but you'll also be raising money for a terrific cause."

Western Suburbs Weekly, Perth. 20/7/2010

The 'Charlies Angels' team from Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth went to town with a BBQ on Tuesday raising over $750!

Seen here (pictured right) the team are in a heated 'Head to Head' battle with the 720 ABC Perth team lead by James Lush.

The penalty forfeit goes something like this... the losing team leader will have to complete a 200m swim, board and run at North Cottesloe Beach. Budgie smugglers optional...!!

Big Mossy aka Graham Moss, Charlies Angels team leader is the poor bloke that will be taking a brisk swim if they can't keep up with the ABC team.

Without the benefit of a radio station the Charlies Angels team are calling for your support and will gladly accept any generous donations you may be able to provide.

Dry July team 'Booze Free Beach and Bay Realty' from NSW celebrated reaching the half way point by holding a cupcake and coffee fundraising morning at their local cafe in Cronulla.

When asked how they're going Kylie Emans said "we are exercising more, feeling fresher, avoiding hangovers and navigating social situations booze free. We are also eating more chocolate to compensate, complaining quite a lot and reflecting on how alcohol has come to play such a huge part in our daily lives (quite scary!)".

Beach and Bay Realty team member Rachel Lord commented "I’m finding the challenge quite tough as alot of friends are turning 21 this month and having birthday parties – 2 per weekend with unlimited free bar tabs. It’s not easy that’s for sure, but it’s a hell of a lot easier than dealing with cancer (obviously!) and so whenever I begin to feel sorry for myself, I just have to remember that this is a tiny tiny challenge in comparison!"

The team of six (all females) are excited about the amount of money they have raised (over $1000!) and the impact this will have on adult cancer patients treated at The Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney.

This week we bring you another tasty offering from our resident Dry July chef 'Fast-Ed Halmagyi', a mocktail worth sharing with friends and if coffee has become your alcohol replacement then we've found just the place for you to visit this Sunday!
